My Apple Mac is running slow: There are few things in life as frustrating as a slow computer. You have work to do and a deadline to reach, but you’re dealing with long delays and a freezing console that would test the patience of a saint.

But don’t despair. Just because your Apple Mac seems keen to enter early retirement, doesn’t mean you can’t make a few changes that will totally revitalise it. That’s right. Giving your Mac a new lease of life can be done in a few easy steps. It doesn’t have to cost a fortune either.

  • My Apple Mac hard drive is full

One of the biggest reasons for a sludgy and slow Mac is an over crammed hard drive. There are several ways you can streamline your hard drive storage – especially if it’s a new machine.

The first thing you should do is clean up your filing system. Delete any old files that you don’t need any more, and either use an external hard drive to do a mass file dump or start storing files directly to cloud.

It’s important to remember that large photo and video files take up a significant amount of room on any hard drive. If you work in design or digital imagery, you are probably going to have stacks of these types of files clogging up your Mac hard drive. Make a concerted effort to delete those you don’t need. However, if you are one of those people who can’t bear to ditch any file unless it’s over five years old, download it to a spare external drive for safe keeping, or make use of cloud storage.

  • My Apple Mac hard drive needs upgrading

If your Apple Mac is over five years old, changes are, you could do with a hard drive upgrade. The most efficient replacement would be an SSD drive, which stands for Solid State Drive. This means the hard drive has no moving parts and is a sealed unity inside your Mac. No cooling fans are required because there are no moving parts to cause heat.

A much more efficient form of storage, and SSD  for your Mac, SSD’s are less easily damaged either through liquid spills or impact from dropping your computer. A normal fan-cooled hard drive could be corrupted from both these types of accidents, resulting in lost data. Not only that, buy an SSD will make your mac run much faster. If you already have an SSD drive in your Mac, you might want to consider updating to one of the latest SSD’s as the tech has improved greatly over the past few years.

  • My Apple Mac OS is outdated

The operating system for Mac is called OS, and annually, OS is upgraded to ensure the latest Apple Macs are catered to. You should keep upgrading your macOS Older OS work much more slowly.
